SO WHAT IS THE BIG PROBLEM?
Man was short sighted indeed when he first programmed computers back
in the '50's and '60's.
Then, computer memory was EXPENSIVE. To save memory, dates were stored
as two digit
numbers. 1964 became 64, 1954 simply 54. Since then, MILLIONS
of programs have been
written using this dating system. Few people realized that this shortcut
would latter cause BIG
problems. Many of these programs are still being used, especially by
large businesses and
governments.
When the computer clock strikes midnight this New Years eve, many computers
and programs
will interpret the "00" as being 1900. Imagine the problems this will
cause as computers begin to
calculate figures such as loans, premium payments, disability checks
ect. that originated in "98" or
"99" for example and continue on into the year 1900! In some cases
it may cause the program to
halt or even completely CRASH. In fact, experts agree that we really
don't know all the effects
it could have on our society.
The Toronto Star stated "Throughout the world there are computer
systems and microchips that
cannot distinguish between the year 1900 and the year 2000. Unless
these systems are identified
and changed, there could be global chaos."
Some systems have already experienced problems when dates in the computer
extended to the
year 2000 or beyond. A spokesperson for the U.S. CIA said "We're concerned
about the
potential disruption of power grids, telecommunications, and banking
services."
According to U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, "Experts are predicting
more trouble in the health
sector, as patient billing and insurance records at hospitals and HMOs
are vulnerable. Certain kinds
of biomedical equipment, including patient-monitoring devices, are
also in danger of malfunction.
Because many electric utilities have gotten a late start, localized
power outages are a threat." What
makes the problem so serious here is that equipment failure could kill
people. Other areas of
business it may not be so serious.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
If you use computers in your business have you taken the steps to see
that your computer is ready
for 2000? Perhaps you have some favorite programs that will have to
be updated or replaced. One
simple way to test is to set your date up to the year 2000 now and
run some applications. Before
you do this it might be a good idea to back some back up copies of
your critical records.
For most of us PC owners there are some simple solutions to the problem.
There are some very
inexpensive programs available that will go through your system and
correct any year 2000
problems found. One example can be found in our
featured ad this week (see above). This is an
excellent program for correcting any Y2K bugs in your computer and
programs.
Do not just assume that your system is OK! And, DON'T WAIT UNTIL NEW
YEARS 2000
to find out!!!!!!!!!!!! This is sure to happen with some large hardheaded
conglomerates and we
will all end up having to pay the price. We don't have to let that
happen with our small business!
We can not control what some bone heads will surely do - WAIT!
BUT, we don't have to let
this happen to our customers.
If you purchased your computer recently, chances are the 2000 problem
has been taken care of.
If you have had your system quite a while, it would be worth your time

One last tip. On New Years eve and day, stay home and safe.
We are just at the infant stages of Opportunities that are based entirely
on the Internet. One such
outfit is SES. It's service or product if you will is Free For All
Link (FFA) pages, Online games,
and other on-line services. They operate as a Multi-Level structure.
In a typical MLM, we would say that SES's pay plan was too Small Potatoes
to add up very fast.
But, online opportunities are not typical. In fact, this thing is so
new, we really have no idea what
typical is yet. In our research of SES we found the company to be a
little unorganized. We were
told that they would give us a FREE membership, that most folks had
to pay for (Oh, the advantages
of being a publisher), and that our credit card would not be charged.
We then found out that the
card had been charged. Then, the president could not remember who we
even were.
SES offers a FREE 30 DAY trial. We didn't even get a free 30 days. They
charged us for the
service (after they said they wouldn't). And, the real kicker was,
after 30 days they canceled
our FFA page! It seems that the program has gotten a little smoother.
Yet, for our money it
was just not worth it. Especially when, with the same effort, you could
be working the Gateway
computer program and earning THOUSANDS of dollars each week (see PRO
Package below).
If you have had an experience with SES, please let us know. Currently
we would have to rate
this opportunity very low. Like a 1.2 on a scale of 10.
