One of the things mentioned in the article is that AOL has perhaps the
best marketing
team ever assembled. How else could you explain the fact that they
have more
members than any ISP, and perhaps the worst service on the net? The
only thing
we can think of that is worse than AOL's service, is that stinkin AOL
browser! If
you have only seen the web through the AOL browser, then you have not
seen the
web!
Now I give credit where credit is due, and AOL deserves a hand for purchasing
Netscape, which owns perhaps the best if not one of the best web browsers
in
the world! AOL ,no doubt, realized that they needed to come up with
something
better than what they had, but the marketing genius knew that it's
sales staff would
be hard pressed to come up with a solution to the stinkin browser problem.
The
kicker is, they still set folks up with the browser I have come to
hate! WHY? I
don't know. Pride I guess.
IF YOU ARE WITH AOL, DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN USE ANOTHER
BROWSER? WHAT IS A BROWSER?
A browser is simply the software you use to look at, and interact with
the net.
It may or may not include an email program.
You can use any browser you want, and still log onto the net with AOL.
I would
suggest that you get a small provider (more on this in a minute) and
can AOL in
a FLASH. But, if you are loyal to the marketing mastermind, AT LEAST
GET
RID OF THAT STINKIN AOL BROWSER!!! You are not seeing all that the
net has to offer (especially if you have an older version of the AOL
software).
WHERE TO FIND GOOD BROWSERS - MANY FOR FREE!
Free browsers are everywhere! You normally get Microsoft's browser which
is
called INTERNET EXPLORER, with your Windows 95 or 98 software. You
may have this on your computer and did not even know it.
NETSCAPE - as mentioned, AOL has now purchased Netscape, but has yet
to ruin it. Netscape is still an awesome program, and recently just
came out
with the new 4.51 version of it's popular browser software Netscape®
Communicator. You can download this FREE at:

Both Netscape® Communicator and Internet Explorer include
HTML email
programs, and web page design features. Master them, and you can come
close to mastering the web.
With one of these programs that support HTML email, you can read OIO
and
other Ezines such as InternetDay with style. Instead of just dull type
email,
you can see COLORS
and
BANNERS. You can click on links
to
email
and
Web Pages. If you don't have HTML based email, you are missing out
on a
lot of fun.
The AOL browser is like trying to learn something (the net) with blinders
on.

HOW TO FIND A GOOD INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
Internet Service Providers or ISP's as they are called, come in all
shapes and sizes.
Perhaps you have fallen for the Mass Marketing Big Company appeal of
an AOL
or Gateway.net? If you are with AOL, I feel like any change in providers
would be
a step up. I don't like them at all, in case you could not tell (remember
you read it
right here in OIO, to stay
away from their MLM plan when it came out!). If I want
to call my ISP, I want to talk to a real person. Not a machine asking
me a 15
minute series of questions, and then telling me to punch one and punch
three, you
know the routine.
My advice is to get with a small local company. Not only will you be
helping a
local business, but you will no doubt get much more attention and better
service
too! After all, if you are number 1,002 you will mean a lot more to
them, than
let's say, number 15,456,473 to the AOLs and Gateway.nets of the world.
Just a few weeks ago, I qualified for a new Gateway computer through
the MLM
program we are involved in (see featured ad above). I was so thoroughly
over-
joyed with my Gateway system (450 MHZ, read write CD, lots of Ram,
17 inch
monitor, etc. etc. etc.) that I thought I would try the Gateway.net
ISP. Boy was I
shocked! The service on the computer is so awesome (I had a glitch
with Windows
98 and their guy walked me through it on the phone in a few minutes),
I thought,
"the ISP must be just as good right!"? WRONG
!!!!
The company offered to set you up with service online via a toll free
#. After
punching numbers and entering my data (name, address, phone, mothers
maiden
name, etc.) what seemed like 50 different times, I finally reached
a page that read
CLICK HERE AND YOU WILL BE ONLINE. I clicked on it, an nothing! I
had already given my credit card information, but no service.
No problem - I THOUGHT. I'll just call. To make a long story short,
that was
a few weeks ago, and I still have not been able to get through to the
ISP. I
called the computer side and they said that I would have to call the
ISP #. I
guess they are charging me now, for a service I have never received?
The
whole thing left me very frustrated. I had a new employee coming in,
and I
needed an ISP for her work station.
The next day, I called a small company in Oklahoma City. They signed
me
up right over the phone, and I was online with them within the hour.
They
even said they would send me a bill! Now that is the way I like to
do
business. A real person, and quick no hassle service. Try matching
that
with AOL or Gateway.net.
MAKE SURE THEY HAVE AT LEAST T-3 LINES
When searching for a small local provider, be sure to ask what kind
of
telephone lines they have. You want to stick with companies that have
at least T-3 lines. If you are with AOL, even a small provider
(less than
1500 members) with T-1 lines would be a step up! Another good
question to ask is how many lines do they have. The more the better.
Ask them "will I ever get busy signals?" Feel them out a little and
you
can tell what type of provider they will be.
If you have several local ISPs where you live ask them: "What ISP
beside your company, would you recommend?" If you ask this a
number of times, the same name or names will come up over and
over again. These are the companies you need to be with.
Again, if you are with AOL - ALMOST ANY ISP would be a step
up!!!
